In one word, “INTERNATIONAL!” In two words, “Very International!” Of course the warehouse membership club, Costco is international with over 500 locations around the globe; but I’m referring to its customers and staff. If you want to know where the foreigners are hanging out at, go check out Costco. It is one of the rare places that you might catch yourself asking, “Where am I?”
Japan has eight warehouse locations currently, with its ninth scheduled to open in the summer of 2009. The first Costco in Japan opened in April 1999 not anywhere near Tokyo, but in southern Japan in Fukuoka Prefecture (JP-40 Japan Map Page) on the island of Kyushu. But little by little, as the company expands, Costco is becoming a household name.
The great thing about having membership with Costco is that you can use it at any warehouse around the world. My membership is based in Hawaii, but I’ve used my card in California and now in Japan. What’s even better is that as the Warehouses are expanding, they are moving toward where I live. I used to go to the Chiba and Tokyo locations, but this past April the newest warehouse opened in Saitama, where I live. And the summer 2009 warehouse is also going to be in another part of Saitama which is even closer. I love it.
A unique service that I’ve only seen in Japan is their delivery service. Because of Japan’s train culture, Costco has adapted to catering their services to both train commuters as well as those who drive. After making purchases at the register, train commuters (or whomever wants to use the service) can have their shopping items sent straight to their doorstep in a day or two by heading over to the delivery area. AND it is very reasonable. There are a few restrictions, such as no perishable items, like meats, eggs, fruits, etc.
Also the food concession area has almost the exact same menu items that I’ve seen in the USA. The prices are a little bit higher here, but you’ll never find anything as reasonable outside their doors. It’s also one of the few places you can actually get a “REAL” Large Pizza! The large size at other establishments are more like a medium back home, plus more expensive (good, but expensive).
Last thought comments: Don’t forget to bring your own shopping bags. If you go by car, it’s good to bring a cooler. Parking for members is free. Go early, popular items tend to sell out early. They only accept American Express credit cards. And if you can, don’t go on the weekend or holidays (it’s jam packed).
So if you’re in Japan and you have the urge or need to go to Costco, go check it out. And don’t forget to pack your membership card!
